Billy Long, Trump’s Pick to Head the IRS, and the Debt Scandal You Won’t Hear About

Missouri Republican Billy Long—the man who looks exactly like what you’d imagine a Missouri Republican would—has just been nominated by Donald Trump to lead the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Yeah, the same IRS that deals with tax issues and audits for all of America.

So here’s the kicker: Billy Long had six figures worth of debt. And guess who paid it off? Big donors to Trump’s campaign—donors with a lot of business in front of the IRS. You don’t say.

Can you guess how the Republicans in the Senate will handle his confirmation hearings? Oh right, they probably won’t care. And if they do, don’t expect a real investigation into this blatant conflict of interest.

This whole situation feels eerily familiar—remember Brett Kavanaugh’s debt being mysteriously cleared right before he joined the Supreme Court? Still no answers there. But hey, we live in a world where the rules don’t apply to the powerful.

So, sure, let’s just ignore all of this and pretend it’s business as usual. Who needs laws when you have billion-dollar donors on your side?
