The President of the United States is ignoring court orders, conspiring with yet another dictator—this time from El Salvador—and openly discussing plans to send American citizens straight to foreign prisons. That’s right: U.S. citizens, labeled as “homegrown criminals,” could soon be sent to El Salvador's notorious jails, with Trump openly stating, “You’d need five more facilities for all the people we’re going to send your way.”

Is this the America we’ve come to? The leader of the free world proudly boasting about the number of people he wants to disappear, as if they’re nothing more than disposable pawns in some twisted game. For years, many believed that democracy was too strong to be undone, that there were enough principled leaders to protect us from tyranny. But as Trump chums it up with autocrats and strips away the very fabric of the rule of law, it’s clear that those beliefs were naïve.

Where are the checks and balances? Where are the brave lawmakers standing up to this nonsense? The courts? They don’t matter anymore. Due process is a distant memory. In the era of Trump, nothing matters except the whims of one man and his authoritarian fantasies.

How many more people will be “disappeared” under this regime? How much more of our democracy will we lose before we wake up? The chilling reality is this: if the courts can’t even keep him in check, what’s left to protect us?
