Florida Republicans Pass Brutal Immigration Bill—But It Wasn’t Cruel Enough for DeSantis
Good morning, everyone! Just a quick update from the state where human rights go to die: Florida.
So, the Florida legislature just passed a massive immigration bill, and you’d think Ron DeSantis would be thrilled, right?
Nope. He’s mad.
Why? Because it wasn’t cruel enough.
According to reports, DeSantis actually threatened to veto the bill—not because it was too extreme, but because he felt it didn’t go far enough to dehumanize immigrants.
So, what’s in the bill? Here’s a breakdown of this dystopian nightmare:
1️⃣ Mandatory death penalty for undocumented immigrants convicted of a capital offense in Florida. (Yes, you read that right—Florida lawmakers just created a special death penalty rule based on immigration status.)
2️⃣ Fines for public officials who refuse to comply with state laws banning sanctuary cities. (Looking at you, Orlando and Orange County!)
3️⃣ Financial incentives for law enforcement to assist ICE in rounding up immigrants. (Translation: Cops get bonuses for catching people who look “undocumented.”)
4️⃣ Eliminates in-state tuition for DACA recipients. A bipartisan law passed in 2014 gave Dreamers the right to pay in-state tuition. Florida Republicans just killed it.
So, where does this stand? DeSantis hasn’t signed it yet, but not because he disagrees with it—because he doesn’t think it’s extreme enough.
Welcome to Florida, where being cruel to immigrants is now a competition.
