Florida: The Sunshine State Where Workers Get Burned
Want to know which state is the most hostile to workers?
Welcome to Florida, where labor rights go to retire—early and without benefits.
Florida has always run on three things since World War II:
cheap land, cheap labor, and zero regulation.
Well, the land isn't cheap anymore… but guess what still is?
Labor. And protections for it.
This legislative session alone, Florida lawmakers have been on a speedrun to strip workers of every shred of dignity:
Trying to weaken or undo the minimum wage—yes, the same wage voters already approved in a constitutional amendment.
Attacking labor unions for the fourth year in a row like it’s a hobby.
Rolling back child labor protections, because apparently 12-year-olds need to “build character.”
Slashing protections for over a million day laborers, including many who are formerly incarcerated and doing the hardest jobs for the lowest pay.
Still no mandatory heat protections, in one of the hottest states in the country.
Meanwhile, grassroots orgs like Beyond the Bars are fighting for day laborers’ basic rights—like not being exploited to death—while driving 8+ hours to beg Tallahassee for a shred of compassion.
And what does the legislature do?
Crickets.
They had time for anti-worker bills, but not even five minutes for heat safety talks. For the seventh year in a row.
So yes, Florida is leading the race—to the bottom.
Florida: come for the beaches, stay because your boss owns your soul.
Shame.
