Just a Bit of Turnover” Turns Into a Civic Earthquake in Louisiana
The Louisiana governor thought voter turnout would be “just 12%”. Maybe 18% max.
He told House Speaker Mike Johnson not to worry—people weren’t paying attention.
Oops.
Turns out, the people of Louisiana were paying attention. And they showed up.
Voter turnout nearly doubled compared to similar past elections.
Why?
Because four constitutional amendments—written by Gov. Jeff Landry—were on the ballot.
Each one a quiet power grab.
Make it easier to charge minors as adults?
Change tax rules to benefit the wealthy?
Let lawmakers override judges and create their own courts?
Change election dates to reduce turnout?
Voters said nope. To all of it.
This is why Republicans push for things like the SAVE Act, which requires in-person documentation to vote—even if it disproportionately affects married women or people without passports.
It’s why they restrict mail-in ballots, make it illegal to give water to people waiting in line, and redraw districts to stay in power.
Because they know what happens when people vote.
If your voice didn’t scare them,
they wouldn’t be working so hard to silence it.
