We all suspected this was coming—the layoffs, the reorgs, the “riffs” were a smokescreen to get rid of career federal employees and replace them with Trump loyalists. And now it’s happening, right now.

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM)—basically the HR department for the entire federal government—is considering a new policy. This policy would make it easier for supervisors to fire federal employees for “intentionally subverting presidential directives.”

That means if a career federal worker refuses to blindly follow an executive order—no matter how harmful or misguided—they could be kicked out.

You might be thinking, “Well, they work for the government. Of course they should follow orders.”

But think about this:

Should a federal worker blindly follow any directive? Should they just comply, no matter what? History has shown us why that’s dangerous.

For example, imagine you work in international food aid, and you’re responsible for creating balanced, nutritious food supplies for famine-stricken populations. Diversity in diet is essential. But under this administration, “diversity” has become a dirty word—thanks to the war on DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion).

Now, imagine you’re a federal nutritionist being told to remove the concept of diversity from your language, even though it’s scientifically and ethically necessary. What do you do?

This proposed OPM policy puts workers in impossible situations—forced to choose between doing what’s right and keeping their jobs.

This isn’t just about federal workers. It’s about whether we let loyalty to one man override common sense, ethics, and humanity.
