Trump and Doge Cut AmeriCorps Volunteers: A Destructive Move for Communities

In yet another attempt to "eliminate waste," Donald Trump and Doge have sent AmeriCorps volunteers across the country packing. But these volunteers? They’re not waste—they’re vital to nonprofits and disaster response efforts that hold communities together.

Having served in AmeriCorps myself, I met people from all walks of life, often serving in the communities they grew up in, hoping to make real change. But let’s not sugarcoat it: this work isn’t for the paycheck. In 2019, I made $17,000, working 18-hour days and juggling multiple jobs just to survive.

These volunteers sacrificed time, energy, and financial stability to make a difference—not for glory, not for cash, but for the good of their communities. And now, those efforts are being cut short in the name of “efficiency.”

This isn’t just about saving money; it's about the cost of losing the people who work tirelessly to serve others.
