Trump Orders DOJ to Investigate Critics—Is This the End of Democracy?
Here we go again—Trump is now demanding the DOJ investigate his critics. This time, it’s Chris Krebs and Miles Taylor, two Republicans who dared to speak out against him. Politico is calling it a "remarkable breach" of the separation between the White House and the Justice Department. Criminal investigations are supposed to be free from political pressure, but it looks like Trump’s out here looking for something to charge these guys with—whether or not there’s an actual crime.
Here’s the rundown:
Chris Krebs, Trump’s former cybersecurity head, was fired for saying the 2020 election wasn’t stolen. Let’s remember, Trump lost by 8 million votes—in the highest voter turnout in 120 years.
Miles Taylor, former DHS chief of staff, is being targeted for writing an op-ed critical of Trump, publishing a book about the chaos in his administration, and endorsing Biden. Apparently, this is "treason" to Trump.
Now, it seems like the DOJ is about to go scouring through Taylor’s life to find anything they can use against him.
Oh, and did we mention?
Both of these men are Republicans.
But the craziness doesn’t stop there. Last week, the DHS announced that it would begin monitoring the social media of visa and green card holders for “terrorism advocacy.” Some free speech lawyers are sounding the alarm, warning that this could be a slippery slope to stifling free speech.
Historians are freaking out, saying America is sliding toward authoritarianism, and this isn’t the first time we’ve seen dictatorial tactics. The warning is clear: dictators can be beaten—and America has a long history of ending dictatorships.
Stay tuned. This could be the beginning of something bigger, and it’s time to keep an eye out.
